Lost final episode: The WORST television series ending ever, to the GREATEST television series of all time?

Lost was filled with suspense, mystery, magic, time travel, some smoke monster action and overall intelligent writing. The last 10 minutes of Lost were possibly the most disappointing television I’ve seen, Jack dying was well done, the fight between Jack and Flocke fantastic, and I’ll admit I cried when Claire and Charlie recognised each other. But those last ten minutes? They were children’s storybook, and left me and my “Lost final party” friends staring blankly at the scene in disbelief. Had I honestly defended Lost for so long, saying that it wasn’t the sort of show to end that way? I do not worry that the last episode of Lost did not answer all of my questions, it does not bother me that Jack died or that Kate and Jack did not end up together. It bothers me that theyended such a fantastically intertwined show with the cheapest concept:

and in the end, they all died… eventually.

fail :( what went wrong Damon and Carlton?

You can vote at the bottom if you want to vent your anger or stand up for the finale (Hawkward :P). The show didn’t have to end with an all-inclusive flashback for Dixie the Polar Bear, or another scene of Hurley’s Dad making a sandwich, but really, it would have been better. This was worse than a fanmade ending. This felt like it was aproducer-written episode, rather than being written by the amazing writers. I truly loved this show, and now I feel like it has been cheaply ended. I feel almost embarrassed. There was so so much potential, so many amazing alternate endings, yet they went for a producer-written, child storybook ending? What went wrong? This was worse than leaving it open. A lot worse. There are some rules that a show must never break, in order to gain respect. Lost had all my respect, I loved the mystery and every creepy moment about the island. The one rule the show broke: never end it with “and it was all a dream, and they woke up, and it meant nothing”. Which is the ultimate, deflating message the show ended on.

The writers were aiming to leave a little bit open, because that was always the quality of the show, the mystery and the unending questions. But they did just the opposite, ending and removing the magic of the show so completely, like no other show could possibly do.

I’m warming to the ending, but I just feel there were so many other, less cheap endings out there. This was just not in the same quality as the rest of the series. Gah. What do you think? I can’t believe that every devout Lost fan loved this ending.

Just a word to Lost ending hater-haters.

I’ve read a number of reviews of the final episode. It seems that there are only two options:

1. You have seen all of Lost and loved it and appreciated the mystery. And hated the unintelligent ending.

2. You didn’t really appreciate it at all, and hence loved the sell out ending.

There are some strong opinions circling the series finale, and in particular against those that believe it a certain way. Particularly, there is strong backlash against people that disliked the ending. I just want to defend this opinion and shed some light on the words against it. I could never love this ending, I may only warm to less hate it. The biggest opinion is that us haters of the ending, didn’t appreciate the rest of the season. This is unfair. If you loved the ‘and they all died’ ending, you just didn’t appreciate what the first five seasons predominantly featured: class, mystery, intelligence, some smoke monster action, the occasional Egyptian symbol.

The ending was just too Seventh Heaven. (No pun).

I am number 1, and I have found quite a number of ‘number 1’ reviews out there, hating the cheap ending, and I just want to defend those.

1. “This review makes it seem like you were a hater from the start”: It might seem that way if you loved the ending (or more specifically, those last ten minutes that the rest of us hated). Seasons 1 – 6: mysterious, intelligent. Season finale: cheap, sell out and overly disappointing. Really, if you liked the season finale, you just didn’t get, love, or appreciate the majority of Lost.

2. “The purgatory thing was a reward for them, they deserve to be happy because they sacrificed everything for the island“. Nobody is saying that they didn’t deserve it. This is just like saying the characters deserved to go to heaven… of course they did… just like in every other show they deserve to end up in heaven, and it is clear that they would end up dying. Isn’t that true for every show? But that is no way to end a show, that is not an ending.
